Simple Summer Water Fun

Let me weave you a tale of two busy toddlers and their mother who is totally unprepared for summer. Spoiler alert: the mom is me.

I was sitting in the back yard recently, watching the kids run around and it suddenly hit me; we are totally slacking in the outdoor toy department. The girls do have a really badass playhouse that Andy built for them. And a small slide that Blair got for her birthday last year. But, that's it. The inside of the playhouse is empty and our driveway is on a hill so they aren't allowed to ride their scooters on it.

Personally, I would be totally fine with them playing in the house all day. But there are only so many hours a day I can spend hiding in my room so that I can't see the mess they are making. Eventually I start to feel that mom guilt and so we head outside for some fresh air. You moms that are always going and going and have hundreds of fun things for your kids to do are my heroes.

A water table is on the list for a birthday present this summer, but until then, I'm improvising. Since Andy is the only one working, I can't just go out and blow a bunch of money on big outdoor toys. Even if I could, I probably wouldn't.

Instead, we decided to take an old toy bucket (any plastic storage type container will do) and fill it with water. I tossed in a couple of plastic cups and some water toys. BINGO. They played for over an hour. I had to make them come in for dinner and baths.

Any suggestions for other simple outdoor activities we should try?
